Zero Waste to Landfill is not just a slogan but a genuine commitment from XL Axiata to reduce environmental impact. Every small step toward sustainability is crucial for our shared future to #JadiLebihBaik (#BecomeBetter). During the celebration of XL Axiata’s 28th anniversary, the management invited around 4,000 employees and their families to participate in waste sorting into categories such as organic, non-organic, and plastic. This waste was then processed separately for recycling or converted into RDF (Refuse Derived Fuel). This event marks XL Axiata's first large-scale implementation of the Zero Waste to Landfill initiative, representing a significant step in its sustainability journey.

JAKARTA, OCTOBER 18, 2024. PT XL Axiata Tbk (XL Axiata) has taken the opportunity of its 28th anniversary to reaffirm its commitment to sustainability programs, including achieving Zero Waste to Landfill (no waste will be sent to landfills). In front of approximately 4,000 employees and their families at the anniversary celebration held at Taman Mini Indonesia Indah in East Jakarta on Saturday (12/10), XL Axiata's management emphasized the company's commitment to waste management.

Yessie D. Yosetya, Director & Chief Enterprise Business and Corporate Affairs Officer of XL Axiata, stated, “Zero Waste to Landfill is not just a slogan; it represents XL Axiata’s concrete steps in supporting environmental sustainability and reducing our carbon footprint. Through this initiative, XL Axiata is committed to responsibly caring for the Earth. Therefore, we invite everyone present to participate in the waste sorting process into categories such as organic, non-organic, and plastic, which will then be processed separately for recycling or converted into RDF, as every small step towards sustainability matters for our shared future #JadiLebihBaik .”

During the anniversary event, XL Axiata collaborated with Waste4Change, a company specializing in waste management services. By effectively managing waste, XL Axiata aims to ensure that all waste generated from this event does not end up in landfills.

To facilitate efficient recycling, waste from the event was sorted into three categories: organic, non-organic, and plastic. Waste4Change has recovery facilities to ensure that all waste is processed according to its category. The residual waste is then transformed into RDF, which can serve as an alternative fuel source to coal.

The results of this program indicate that the collaboration between both parties at XL Axiata's 28th anniversary successfully managed approximately 1.2 tons of waste. This waste comprised 31% paper, 28% plastic, 38% residuals, and 2% organic material.

From the total 1.2 tons of waste from the anniversary event, 60% was recyclable, including cups, metal, plastic, and paper. 2% of organic waste was composted, and 38% of residuals were converted into RDF. Overall, this initiative resulted in lower greenhouse gas emissions, totalling 1,297 kg CO2 equivalent per event.

Thanks to effective waste processing, all waste generated during this event did not end up in a landfill. In other words, our mission for Zero Waste to Landfill has been realized. Additionally, this initiative has reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 3,605 kg CO2 eq/event, equivalent to planting nearly 150 trees. This step demonstrates XL Axiata's tangible contribution to supporting global targets for mitigating climate change. This is a significant achievement, considering that events of similar size typically generate around 4,902 kg CO2 eq/event,” Yessie added.

Meanwhile, Pandu Priyambodo, Lead Marketing & Event Partnership at Waste4Change, expressed, “Waste4Change appreciates XL Axiata's initiative in managing waste at its 28th anniversary event. XL Axiata is the first telecommunications company to collaborate with Waste4Change to implement #ZeroWasteToLandfill through Responsible Event Waste Management. XL Axiata has demonstrated that large events can be held while still being environmentally conscious. We hope this initiative inspires more companies to adopt responsible waste management practices.”

XL Axiata has implemented effective waste management initiatives at its offices, both at headquarters and in various cities. Employees are actively involved in carbon footprint reduction efforts, such as through the Green Office program that has been running for several years. This program includes responsible waste management, reducing paper usage, and energy efficiency initiatives in company buildings.

Through these measures, XL Axiata affirms its position as an environmentally conscious company committed to earth preservation efforts. By introducing innovations and collaborations in waste management, XL Axiata aims to inspire other companies to take similar steps in addressing global sustainability challenges.
